How to make it Region Free

Beware: Haven't checked the limitation of numeber of changes, which is 25 times!!
But if you change it region free then it works OK, so don't try to play with process.

Procedure Confirmation:

1. Switch on the DVD and open the tray.
2. From remote. Press four times zero: 0000 + (the digit for corresponding region,
e.g 1 for region 1 , 2 for region 2 and similarly ----- 0 for region free)(This means if u want region free settings then u need to press 00000 or for region 1 : 00001) 3. Message will be displayed on screen saying region 0 which means the DVD is region free!!
4. You can check the region by open the tray and pressing the display button on the remote.

How to change its firmware

Under construction..

You have to download the firmware here: cdr_DVD640-634_V323_030116.zip
and burn a CD-R (Note: not a CD-RW) with this specification:

1) the CD have to be in MODE X2 format.
2) in the ROOT of CD file: DVD618CD.ROM.
3) always in the ROOT of CD, you have to burn together another file size > 100MB otherwise the DVD Player will not recognize the CD.

Useful Hacks

To switch on/off the Picture CD functionality of the Philips DVD 640 player perform the following steps:

To turn it on:
1 - Open the tray
2 - Enter the 4 digit code (0)(0)(0)(0) on the remote control
3 - Press the (ANGLE) button on the remote control

Picture CD functionality can be turned off by pressing (SUBTITLE) instead of (ANGLE)
----
To change Front Keys Type:

"Tray open, 0000 audio" gives dvd634 front keys
"Tray open, 0000 zoom" gives dvd640 front keys
"Tray open, 0000 RepAB" gives dvd733 front keys

Since it lists also the left-arrow and subtitle keys, I think it is save to say it is official Philips coding, not hacking.
